The Giallorossi were beaten 2-1 in Ukraine, but an Edin Dzeko strike was decisive to beat Shakhtar Donetsk at the Olimpico, sending them through to the quarters on away goals.

“We suffered, but can now enjoy this qualification. I am happy today and from tomorrow we can think about the draw, but for tonight we need to relish the moment,” Monchi told Mediaset Premium.

“I feel happy and proud to receive this reward for our hard work. This club is special, because it works with heart and feeling. Everything we do is for our fans and they deserve a night like this.”

The television crew managed to get a pledge out of the Spanish director.

“I don’t know all the words to the club anthem yet, but it’s a wonderful song. If we go into the semi-final, I promise I’ll sing it!”

Monchi was doubly happy this evening, as his old club Sevilla beat Manchester United to reach the final eight too.

“I am happy both for us and for Sevilla.”
