Former Genoa striker Kazuyoshi Miura has signed a new contract with Yokohama FC, extending his professional career past his 51st birthday.

Nicknamed ‘King Kazu’, the Japanese forward began his career with Brazilian side Santos in 1986.

He had a loan spell at Genoa in the 1994-95 season, scoring one goal in 21 games, though it did come in the Derby della Lanterna with Sampdoria.

Having retired from international duty with 55 goals in 89 caps, Miura joined Yokohama FC in 2005, at the age of 38.

He has been playing for them every since, and in March last year he became the oldest player ever to play in a professional football match at the age of 50 years and 7 days.

That record was taken from English winger Stanley Matthews, and Miura broke the same player’s record for oldest goalscorer a week later.

Today it has been announced that the veteran has signed a new one-year contract with Yokohama, despite the fact he’ll turn 51 on February 26.

In last season’s J2 League, Miura made 11 appearances and scored once.

"I will always play my heart out and hope to continue to grow," Miura told Kyodo after his renewal.
