Stefano Pioli highlighted the difficulty of Milan’s upcoming matches ahead of their clash against Atalanta tomorrow.

The Rossoneri will be hoping for a convincing result in Bergamo tomorrow after an exciting and volatile season opener against Udinese. Atalanta suffered a painful slump last campaign and finished in 8th, so a strong start is key for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side if they’re to return to European competition again.

Speaking in a press conference, Pioli first discussed the difficulty facing Milan in their clash against Atalanta.

“We know how last season went and it certainly created a wealth of experience that we’re carrying with great enthusiasm.

“Then it’s clear that we’re only in our second league game and from next week we have a tour de force ahead of us. But the important thing was to prepare tomorrow’s game as well as possible, Atalanta are a very strong team, it’s a direct clash.”

He underlined how tomorrow’s game will also be vital for helping the team continue improving.

“It’ll be a step to grow and to understand where to work. It’ll be an important test. Atalanta started well, they changed a few players but they’re a team that combines physicality and quality.”

The Milan coach gave his thoughts on talismanic midfielder Sandro Tonali.

“He can become a complete midfielder, he already is but then it’s clear that he still needs experience.

“The growth he had last season was important, but I found him with more hunger and with the awareness that he still has to work on this level. Now he is more aware of his qualities.”

He also spoke about new signing Charles De Ketelaere.

“He’s done very well in all three areas up front, but starting as a trequartista or second striker. Not as a winger.

“I can hardly see him starting on the right, and if Charles is a trequartista, he will play there. His adaptability may be an advantage.”

Finally, Pioli discussed how matches between Milan and Atalanta have always been entertaining in recent years.

“Two teams who know each other well, who try to develop proactive football and strike the opponent.

“Every match is different, but for what are the qualities of the two teams I think it will be a balanced team.”

Last season, Milan came out on top in both meetings with Atalanta, winning the away game 3-2 and the home match 2-0.
