Paolo Maldini feels Milan were right to stick with Gennaro Gattuso and that fans ‘mustn’t be disappointed’ if the club do not qualify for the Champions League.

Milan recently tied Gattuso down to a contract for the next three years, although their hopes of making the 2018-19 Champions League took a blow after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Sassuolo.

Milan recently tied Gattuso down to a contract for the next three years, although their hopes of making the 2018-19 Champions League took a blow after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Sassuolo.

“I think it was right to reward Rino with a proper contract for what he’s done so far and what I believe he’ll do as Milan Coach because he’s surprised a lot of people tactically and in a managerial sense,” Maldini told Sky Sport Italia.

“I must say that he’s really turned a page with this team. Comparisons? He’s unique, we’ll see in time and his results will prompt any comparisons.

“Disappointment of no Champions League? There mustn’t be any because we mustn’t forget where Rino took the team from.

“As he rightly says, however, there can’t be any excuses if other teams give you the chance to make some headway.”
