Ancelotti is the prime candidate, especially as he was fired by Real Madrid this evening, but has said he will take a year off.

CEO Adriano Galliani is in Madrid and sat down for dinner with Ancelotti and consultant Ernesto Bronzetti tonight to discuss the project.

They were spotted at the Wellington Hotel in Madrid.

“I’d like to keep in mind these two fantastic years at Real Madrid,” wrote Ancelotti on Twitter.

“Thanks to the club, the supporters and my players. #HalaMadridYNadaMas ”

There are numerous candidates, but Sky Sport Italia suggest President Silvio Berlusconi is not convinced by Empoli boss Sarri, Sampdoria’s Mihajlovic – who is on the verge of joining Napoli – or Sevilla tactician Emery.

The only options Berlusconi is happy with are current Fiorentina Coach Vincenzo Montella and Italy manager Antonio Conte.

Montella has said repeatedly in recent weeks that he wants to sit down and discuss the strategy with Fiorentina before deciding on his future.

Conte seems settled on the Azzurri bench, but there is one other radical alternative.

Current youth team Coach Cristian Brocchi could be given the reins of Milan with Marcello Lippi as a technical director and behind the scenes advisor.
