Sinisa Mihajlovic’s return to the Bologna dugout is a ‘good sign’, according to one of Italy’s leading experts in the field of haematology.

Mihajlovic made a surprise appearance on the Bologna bench during their Serie A opener against Verona on Sunday, despite the Coach having only been diagnosed with leukaemia a month ago.

“It’s a good sign. It shows he’s strong, but caution is needed,” Sante Tura told Resta del Carlino.

“The fact that the doctors gave him permission means there is a positive response from the organism.

“It means that in all probability, his bone marrow has repopulated, but it’s clear that like any patient who’s been discharged from hospital, he’ll need to have some regard [for his condition].

“His recovery is a large-scale undertaking, which will also take place at home. The first step towards his healing has been taken, but the disease will certainly have to be kept under control.

“Certainly a patient in this condition must undergo at least a second course of treatment and then another period in hospital with a view to a bone marrow transplant.

“It’s the most probable solution for patients with myeloid leukaemia. Medicine has made great strides in this field.

“In 2019 it’s very easy to find a suitable donor because a compatibility of 50 percent between the two marrows is enough.”
