Messi, who recently became the Blaugrana’s all-time leading goal-scorer and went into last night’s Champions League quarter-final with 30 goals from his last 25 games played in the competition, cut a frustrated figure during yesterday’s 0-0 at San Siro.

The 24-year-old has reflected that his team deserved more than they got from the match and hinted that Milan were fortunate to get away with a first-half penalty claim.

“I’m disappointed, we did not win despite having played a great game,” Messi told the Spanish media.

“We deserved to beat Milan. I didn’t see the action on Sanchez, but according to what [my teammates] are saying, I think it was a penalty.”

The three-time Ballon d’Or winner also looked ahead to the second leg at Camp Nou.

“The return leg will depend on us, we always play to win, we must play our usual game. It will be a tough game, they are very strong physically.

“However, if we play like last night, we can do it. It will be risky if we concede a goal, then we will need two to qualify.”
