The response on behalf of Lionel Messi gives hope to the clubs interested in the Barcelona talisman. ‘It’s absolutely obvious that the €700m release clause is not applicable’.

Jorge Oracio Messi, father and representative of the player Lionel Messi, responded to the document published on August 30, 2020, by La Liga.

“We don’t know which contract they have analysed and what are the bases on which they conclude that the aforementioned would have a ‘termination clause’ applicable in the event that the player decides to exercise the unilateral clause to free himself, with effect from the end of the 2019-20 season,” the statement reads.

“This is due to an obvious mistake from La Liga. As the clause 8.2.3.6 of the contract signed by the player with the club literally indicates: ‘This compensation will not apply if the termination of the contract by unilateral decision of the player takes effect starting from the end of the 2019-20 season.

“It’s therefore obvious that the €700m release clause is absolutely not applicable.”

La Liga responded immediately to the comment from Jorge Messi with another statement.

“The €700m release clause exists and is absolutely valid, their interpretation of the contract is decontextualized and far from the literality of the same.”
