The Belgian frontman scored a hat-trick in this afternoon’s thrashing of their local rivals in what was the first Serie A derby to take place between the teams.
“We know we can play badly. Against Shakhtar we made mistakes and didn’t play our game,” Mertens said referring to the Partenopei’s disappointing Champions League defeat to the Ukrainian side in midweek.

“Other teams are beginning to study our game, but today we showed we can do damage.”
With a 100 per cent record in Serie A after four games as well as having the best goal difference, Napoli are the new leaders of Italy’s top-flight.
However, Mertens played down talk of the Partenopei winning the Scudetto.
“The League season is long, Inter and Juve are doing well but we will see.”
