Napoli winger Dries Mertens was unhappy with his bench role in Belgium’s draw with Finland and slammed “shameful” claims that he is an impact player.

Mertens was brought on in the 58th minute of Belgium’s 1-1 draw with Finland, which was only achieved by Romelu Lukaku’s late equaliser, and he could not hide his dissatisfaction at only being named a substitute in the friendly.

“It was a strange day, in which I didn’t expect to start on the bench,” he said after the game.

“I often read that I play better when I come off the bench, but it’s not the case and I think it’s shameful to read such opinions.

“I’m not tired but I’m disappointed to have started on the bench, although I think it’s the same for everyone and in football, individuals don’t count, only the team.

“No-one likes to sit on the bench and I’m happy to have contributed to the draw with Finland, but we had to win.

“I’m sure we’ll do better against Italy at the European Championship.”
