Amid reports Dries Mertens has agreed a contract extension with Napoli, the city celebrates by working to make ‘Ciro’ an honorary citizen of Naples.

He was hotly pursued by Inter and Chelsea to join them as a free agent, but last night and this morning, multiple sources in Italy assured Mertens will remain at the Stadio San Paolo.

The Belgian is expected to earn €4m per season until June 2022, plus €500,000 in bonuses and a signing-on fee of €2.5m.

Part of the reason for the turnaround was his love for the fans and city, where he has been so embraced that he was given the most Neapolitan of all nicknames: Ciro.

Fans inundated his social media over the last few days with messages begging him to stay and it seems the charm offensive worked.

It’s not over yet, as a local politician today suggested taking steps to make Mertens an honorary citizen of Naples.
