Belgium winger Dries Mertens has admitted that he has been ‘surprised’ by the quality shown by America in Brazil.

Marc Wilmots’ side take on Jurgen Klinsmann’s men in the Last 16 in Salvador on Tuesday evening, and the Napoli attacker has insisted that the Red Devils will have to be at their best to make the quarter-finals.

“The US have surprised me,” he told Sporza. “They are a real team and have a united group.

“Hopefully I have proved that I can contribute, be that from the start or coming on as a substitute.”

Mertens then praised their captain Vincent Kompany.

“He is our leader and knows how to give the group the energy needed before and during the game.”
