Dries Mertens has outlined his hope that Napoli find a way to keep hold of Pepe Reina this summer.

The Spaniard’s loan deal with the club has expired and, amid believed failed negotiations centred on wage demands, the goalkeeper’s future looks to be elsewhere.

However, one teammate from last season maintains hope at seeing the 31-year-old back at the San Paolo for preseason.

“I hear many rumours, but even so I would very much to see Reina stay,” Mertens is quoted by the Corriere dello Sport today.

“He is a player with great personality, who gives security to the whole team.

“It would be a shame if he could not find an agreement with Napoli.”

Mertens was talking during Belgium’s preparation for their World Cup quarter-final with Argentina, where he will come up against teammate Gonzalo Higuain.

“I’ll send him a message. I’ll tell him that in a few days we will meet and we will see who will win. We are not afraid.

“I’ve exchanged many messages with Gonzalo, also with Gokhan Inler, he is one with whom I have swapped several messages.

“I will try to call him, I can imagine he is hurt after elimination [to Argentina].”
