“We are playing well and want to continue like this, as the important thing is that we’ve secured our place in the next round,” Mertens told the Corriere dello Sport.

Coach Roberto Martinez confirmed he’ll make numerous changes for the final group game against England, as Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard and Mertens are all carrying minor injuries.

There are even some suggestions Belgium might prefer to finish runners-up, as it provides an easier route going forward.

“I really like that I can feel the support even from Italy. It’s not just Neapolitans, as after five years in Italy, I have many friends,” continued Mertens.

Today he played on the wing in a trident attack and provided an assist for Romelu Lukaku, but then moved to a centre-forward role once Lukaku limped off.

“I feel in good shape, for two years now I’ve been playing regularly for club and country, so that makes me happy.”

The forward was asked if his Belgian teammates at Chelsea, such as Eden Hazard, had asked about Maurizio Sarri.

“No, they didn’t. I don’t even know if he’s signed for them.”
