Felipe Melo said Inter “played with heart and are on the right track” after a 2-0 victory over Genoa.

It was a mid-table tussle, as only one point separated the sides going into San Siro and the ultras were on strike for the first half, showing only a series of insulting banners.

“The victory was too important this evening. We too, like the fans, are angry about what’s happened so far this season. We must do much more,” the Brazilian told Mediaset Premium.

“The victory was too important this evening. We too, like the fans, are angry about what’s happened so far this season. We must do much more,” the Brazilian told Mediaset Premium.

“We had already shown a professional performance in the Europa League against Sparta Prague this week and you could tell today we played with heart.

“This is the right track. It might not have been a great performance, but we worked hard and did what Inter need to do: win.”

Melo was among the players frozen out by Frank de Boer, but has been revitalised since Stefano Pioli took charge.

“It was a choice made by the Coach and I respect that. In truth, that experience helped me to grow, because it was the first time I wasn’t even chosen for the bench. It was difficult and people even said I caused trouble in the locker room, but that’s not true.

“I am no longer 22 years old, I am 33 and can always help the squad with my experience.”
