Inter legend Sandro Mazzola believes Rafa Benitez is having problems at San Siro because his players are tired especially from a mental perspective.

The Nerazzurri haven't won a match in five games in all competitions and have slipped as far as nine points behind League leaders Milan.

Interviewed on Radio anch'io lo Sport, Mazzola said: "Inter are a little squeezed. The players always want to win, but the problem is that they have spent a lot of energy above all from a mental point of view.

"I remember a Dejan Stankovic interview a month ago talking about Jose Mourinho in which he said the Portuguese Coach was great because when the players didn't have anything more [in the tank], he convinced them that they could play another seven or eight minutes.

"Inter knew for a while, perhaps already in January or February, that Mourinho would leave. And among the solutions available, the best in my opinion was Benitez.

"Perhaps he only has one fault, which is obviously that of not having insisted on a couple of valid reinforcements. Judging the rest isn't possible. We don't see every training session."

Asked if the players had softened in their approach, Mazzola said: "That's what people always say when things go badly. The problem is that a couple of signings should have been made."

Pressed on whether Benitez should be fired, he replied: "I don't believe so. Today we should reflect a little bit more. I don't believe that Inter will change Coach at least until the winter break unless they lose all the games, but that would seem difficult to me."
