Last night the Partenopei beat Novara 2-0 for their first win in five rounds, ending a run of three consecutive defeats.

“It was important to get the result. The team felt the pressure of those three straight losses, so winning and keeping a clean sheet were essential to rediscover our calm and confidence.

“At the end of the day we put in a good performance against a Novara side that did not give up. With Ezequiel Lavezzi injured, I thought it best to introduce an extra midfielder so there was more protection on the flanks and for the defence.

“I hope the confidence won back in this game can help Napoli end the season on a high, even if the overall fitness levels are certainly not optimal.”

Mazzarri was asked about the future, namely Edinson Cavani’s comments that he doesn’t know if he’ll be here next season and Under-21 international Lorenzo Insigne’s potential return from the loan spell at Pescara.

“It is not easy to help young players grow at Napoli, because people expect to be high up the table and there is a lot of pressure. Insigne is an excellent player who is making leaps forward, but we will have to evaluate over the summer which is the best course of action.

“As for Cavani, he is a pillar of the team and the club sees him the same way. At this moment there are no problems with him, but never say never in football.”
