Walter Mazzarri praised Sampdoria’s performance and admitted “it was Inter’s worst performance of the season.”

New President Erick Thohir was in the stands for the first time, but watched Renan snatch a last-minute equaliser for 1-1.

“I’ll be honest, the way I see football this was our worst performance of the season. We went too deep after going 1-0 up, though even then we hadn’t started that well,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“Too many players were below par today. Ricky Alvarez started ok, but after his booking he seemed tense and didn’t move well enough. Sampdoria remained aggressive throughout and they fully deserved the draw today.

“We had several chances to finish off the game with Fredy Guarin hitting the post, but we weren’t ruthless enough. A great team must bring something extra out to put the result beyond doubt.

“Sampdoria deserve credit for pressing us, winning their tackles and never giving in. Our intensity levels were off and that’s something we have to reflect on.

“Just as we deserved to win against Bologna, I have to admit we deserved to draw this game. This is not the Inter I like to see.

“I am sending a message to the players, as I don’t understand why sometimes we drop our guard and slow down the tempo. Some of those who are unaccustomed to playing regularly for Inter must learn they need to always give their all in every game.

“We were far too inconsistent and only held control for five minutes at a time. We were distracted, pushed forward sporadically and I saw a different level of concentration to our usual standards. We must reflect on that and not do it again.”

New President Thohir was in the San Siro stands for the first time, sitting alongside Massimo Moratti.

“It was nice to see Thohir and Moratti together, helping the club to get bigger and better. We can’t say this affected our concentration, it’s just a shame we were unable to give him a victory today. I think it hurt me to throw points away more than it did him!”
