Walter Mazzarri was again left to rue mistakes in front of goal as Napoli were defeated by Atalanta. “This game was cursed.”

The Partenopei wasted numerous chances in their 1-0 win over Chievo at the weekend, but this time were made to pay for Edinson Cavani’s absence.

“This game was cursed,” shrugged Mazzarri on Halloween night.

“We controlled it from start to finish. We had at least seven shots on goal, while they scored at the only opportunity. We immediately realised it was an off day.

“I’d like to look to the performance, but the fact is the results count and tonight we lost.”

Cavani has now missed two consecutive matches due to a thigh problem and Inter have leapfrogged Napoli into second place.

“We tried until the end, but it was right not to run a risk with this type of injury.”

Mazzarri was also asked about his statement that he could take a sabbatical at the end of this season.

“I never said I was going to leave Napoli in the summer, just that I would consider my options. These are just things a Coach who is out of contract can say. My future will only be decided at the end of the season.”
