Walter Mazzarri admits “this is a difficult moment and the fans have to stand by” Napoli after their Coppa Italia exit.

The Partenopei had lifted the trophy to the sky in May, but were knocked out in a 2-1 home defeat to Bologna before even reaching the Quarter-Finals.

“I am really sorry for the fans, as we were the Coppa Italia holders and it hurts to go out like this,” Mazzarri told Radio Marte.

“We are in any case a united group and will get back on track as soon as possible. This is a difficult moment and the fans have to stand by us.”

The defeat came just three days after Bologna won 3-2 at the San Paolo in Serie A with Panagiotis Kone again on target.

“We tried to change a few things and created many scoring opportunities, but there were too many mistakes in defence.

“We must be more attentive and humble when defending in order to be more solid. I have a pretty clear idea on what to say to the players.”

This was also the first game since Napoli were docked two points in the betting scandal, which saw Paolo Cannavaro and Gianluca Grava handed six-month bans.
