The Nerazzurri have come in for some criticism this season, with the club currently in fifth place and unlikely to finish in the Champions League places.

But the Coach has admitted that he wants to defend his players at all costs – just like the Chelsea boss.

“I feel like Mourinho,” he told Il Sole 24. “I want to defend the group. That’s what I try to do all the time.

“I think I can say that I improve players that have worked under me. My task now is to identify this Inter and work towards becoming a manager like [former Manchester United man Sir Alex] Ferguson.

“The players know how to win, we just have to work on their mentality – but these lads are willing to fight to achieve a good result.

“The goal this season is to get as high as possible in the table.

“There’s been a big misunderstanding in my career – people say that I arrive at a situation where there is no expectation, then I start to get some unexpected results. Then there’s more and more expectation.

“But I want to finish well this year, and then we can start next season in a great way.”
