Erick Thohir hopes that Walter Mazzarri’s fighting spirit is transmitted to Inter’s players this term, whilst he reflects on having ‘two children’.

The Indonesian has given an extensive interview to the Gazzetta dello Sport and, on from discussing the new boardroom set-up and considering transfer strategy, he also spoke about meeting with the Nerazzurri’s Coach this week during their pre-season work in Washington.

“On Monday we were on the bus together and I was teasing him,” Thohir revealed.

“I like his energy during the game and seeing him smile often I told him that I was worried because if he smiles then the team relaxes.

“I was joking, of course, but I really wish that the group had the face for battle that Mazzarri has.

“Someone who will not relax at all, always looking for the best. That is part of his character.

“Did we talk about the defence being a back three or back four? Of course, we will use both. But certainly there is no winning formula.”

Thohir was also asked during the interview of fans’ fears that he may neglect Inter during the season when out of Italy for extended spells.

“I will come over once a month, but no more than three times a month like last year! I did not see DC United for months, they are the ones at risk of being neglected.

“Basically, I have two children…and in this sense it is important to have leaders that I can trust blindly, so that they can make some decisions on their own.”
