Walter Mazzarri did not ‘expect’ Torino to be thrashed 4-1 by Empoli but admits the Tuscans were fully deserving of their win.

As well as boosting Empoli’s hopes of another season in Serie A, the result leaves Toro relying on Lazio to finish in the top six if they are to qualify for the Europa League as the seventh-placed team.

“We didn’t start well, but we have to give credit to Empoli. They have beaten some big teams at their ground,” Mazzarri said after the game.

“They play good football and make it difficult for anyone who plays there. We were under pressure for half an hour and, after we equalised, they caused us a lot of problems.

“We probably wrongly believed we were back in the game at that point, but we couldn’t keep our concentration and we were exposed on the counterattack. We made too many defensive mistakes, but that could have been down to the fact that we wanted to win the game and left ourselves open.

“We have had a great season and this defeat doesn’t change that. We want to get the win now in our last game and finish the season on a high note.

“This 4-1 loss was unexpected, but I can’t fault my players, they have had an excellent season.

“A draw would have been no use to us and the desire to win left us unbalanced. We allowed our opponents to counterattack us too easily.”
