The Orobici had been leading 2-1 at the Westfalenstadion thanks to a Josip Ilicic brace, but were undone by the late Michy Batshuayi double.

“We prepared the game well and put in a strong performance against a technically-gifted Borussia Dortmund side,” the defender told RMC Sport.

“We emerge with heads held high yet again, because we proved that we can fight it out with anyone, including them. We had done well to overturn the result, but then gifted the 2-2 goal with an error and it made everything more complicated.

“I maintain we’ve been doing incredible things for the last two years and can look forward with confidence. On Sunday there’s a very important Serie A match with Fiorentina, then the second leg with Borussia will be different.”

Over 5,000 Atalanta fans travelled to Dortmund for the Round of 32 clash and the atmosphere should be electric for the second leg at the Mapei Stadium.

“The fans are fantastic and we can’t thank them enough. There is so much love for our team and we must repay them with performances like this and hopefully a win to achieve qualification.”
