Consistent reports have placed Benitez as the hot favourite, especially as he will now be a free agent following his spell as Chelsea Interim Manager.
It is believed that talks began today when President Aurelio De Laurentiis, directors Bigon and Chiavelli flew to London, but had to be interrupted so Chelsea could leave for their US tour.
However, according to other rumours emanating from Naples this evening, Benitez was not the only Spanish tactician who Napoli met with today.
The other was Wigan Athletic boss Martinez, fresh from beating Manchester City to win the FA Cup, even though the team was relegated from the Premier League.
