Nainggolan will not be taking part, as he was “temporarily suspended from football activities for disciplinary reasons.”

These were turning up late repeatedly to training, but after that, audio emerged of Nainggolan speaking to a friend on the phone, telling him he wanted to go back to Roma and would have to create a scene to make it happen.

“Our position is the one we released in our press statement. We as a club took on the advice of the Coach, who I want to underline is the leader of the group, and made this decision,” Marotta told Sky Sport Italia.

“After that, it is only fair we deal with internal matters internally. The lad came to the stadium tonight to watch the game and that shows how much he cares for the team and the club.

“Nainggolan will absolutely not be on the market in January. We took this action because it was only right to do so, there are rules and anyone who breaks them has to pay.

“After that, it’ll be up to us to support him to ensure he gives his best performances. Some situations have always happened in football, there’s no need to lock him in jail. We took action, he acknowledged his mistake and afterwards we can all move on.”
