Inter director Beppe Marotta defends Lautaro Martinez and admits the Real Madrid match is part of a ‘quite strange’ Champions League group.

“This is an important match for the two clubs. It’s not quite as fascinating in this context and without fans, but it remains an important game,” Marotta told Sky Sport Italia at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano.

It has been a bizarre few rounds in this group, as Shakhtar Donetsk beat Real Madrid 3-2 in Spain, drew 0-0 with Inter in Ukraine, and yet tonight lost 6-0 at home to Borussia Monchengladbach.

“The group is quite strange, as we see Borussia are winning heavily against Shakhtar, who beat Real Madrid here. It’s going to be a relevant fixture, but the results coming up I feel will be even more important,” added Marotta.

Romelu Lukaku is out injured and Alexis Sanchez not fit to start, so there is more pressure on Lautaro Martinez.

“There has been so much criticism of Lautaro, but he is young and needs to be given time to grow, even through performances that are not particularly convincing.

“Last season was his first as a regular starter, so we hope he can rediscover the form he had last term.”
