Inter director Beppe Marotta explains why Chile international Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal were released from their contracts.

The Nerazzurri were ruthless in cutting back their squad over the summer and found it particularly tricky to get some veterans off their books.

Olympique Marseille picked up Sanchez as a free agent in August 2022 when Inter opted to pay the forward money to terminate his contract early.

He has made a good impression in France, scoring 10 goals in 25 competitive appearances this season.

“Sanchez did not remain because of economic issues, as we needed to lower the overall wage bill,” Marotta told La Tercera in Chile.

“I can assure you, it was not a request of our coach. As for Vidal, that was simply his age. Our sporting project necessitated bringing in younger players, for example Kristjan Asllani, who was born in 2002.”

Vidal moved to South America for Brazilian side Flamengo for free in July, just weeks after his 35th birthday.
