The Coach took over from Alberto Malesani at Christmas, but after notching up only 13 points in 14 games, he was axed and Malesani recalled.

“I don’t think the squad decided my dismissal. I refuse to believe that there was a player conspiracy against me, otherwise they never would’ve tried to fight back at San Siro,” he said after a 5-4 defeat to Inter.

“I was bitter and shocked at the news, because I always try to give my all. I don’t even want to look for alibis, nor do I want to create controversy, because I was happy in Genoa.

“It’s a shame, as if Alberto Gilardino and Miguel Veloso had not been consistently injured, it might’ve been different and our fixture list would be considerably more reassuring now.”
