Federico Marchetti has recalled his ‘difficult’ spell with former side Cagliari, ahead of facing them in Lazio’s goal on Sunday.
Having represented Italy at the 2010 World Cup, Marchetti’s desire to leave the Sardinian side that summer saw him frozen out of the first-team squad and made to train with the reserves for almost the entire 2010-11 League season.
Having since left to sign for Lazio last summer, the goalkeeper still remembers what got him through that 12-month spell of frustration.

Having since left to sign for Lazio last summer, the goalkeeper still remembers what got him through that 12-month spell of frustration.
“My time at Cagliari? It was difficult,” he told children at a local Roman school he and a few teammates were visiting on Friday.
“We can say that apart from the first two months, where I have suffered enough as I didn’t understand what was happening, I tried to see beyond it, to prepare for a future somewhere else.
“It was not easy, but I found motivation in the gym and I trained with a martial arts expert. I also discovered that other sport.
“This was one of the reasons that kept me going, looking beyond what I was experiencing.
“Will we win on Sunday? Yes, we will try.”
Meanwhile, his captain Stefano Mauri has called on the fans’ support ahead of what he sees as the first in a series of crucial battles for the club’s target of Champions League qualification.
“We need to win again and Sunday is our chance. We play well at home and I want to hear the scream of the Olimpico.
“There are 10 games left and they will be 10 battles.”
