The Sardinians opened their campaign with a 2-0 defeat to newly-promoted Empoli and the performance infuriated their Coach.

“We worked in training with the right determination this week after that false start,” said Maran in his Press conference.

“That setback will give us the right motivation and drive to do well against Sassuolo and we’ve been discussing the elements that didn’t work last Sunday.

“The Cagliari I saw against Empoli was very different to the one we’re accustomed to. I certainly never want to see such a passive approach again. I’d prefer to see us take the initiative and make mistakes rather than passively let the opposition play around us.

“Empoli and Sassuolo have quite similar approaches, so we need to be more aggressive and work as a unit. Too many things didn’t work last week and we have to re-evaluate.”

Cagliari can count on more experience today, as Darijo Srna and Ragnar Klavan are in the squad, but Fabio Pisacane is injured.

“It is possible that Klavan could start. He is one of the options, while Srna has a lot of quality. I need to figure out the right mosaic with the new pieces.”

Cagliari squad for Sassuolo: Rafael, Daga, Aresti, Cragno; Pajac, Andreolli, Klavan, Pisacane, Lykogiannis, Srna, Romagna; Dessena, Bradaric, Cigarini, Barella, Padoin, Ionita, Faragò, Castro; Cerri, Farias, Sau, Pavoletti
