The FA took the unusual step of advertising for a new tactician via its website after England went out in the first round of the European Under-21 Championship.

Stuart Pearce left the position and senior England manager Roy Hodgson has had to take over as interim boss for the Under-21 side too.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Mangia is one of the candidates for the job full-time.

He took over from Ciro Ferrara in the summer of 2012 and helped Italy to the Final of the European Under-21 Championship, losing 4-2 to Spain.

However, Mangia said when he decided not to renew his contract with the Azzurrini that he missed the day to day work of club football.

It is therefore unlikely the 39-year-old would accept another stint on an international bench.

He has been replaced within the Italy set-up by former Under-20 Coach Gigi Di Biagio.
