Devis Mangia has reacted with surprise to claims that he could succeed Ciro Ferrara on the Italian Under-21 bench.

Ferrara is set to leave the role after agreeing to take over at newly-promoted Sampdoria for the 2012-13 campaign.

According to reports in Italy, Arrigo Sacchi, technical co-ordinator of Italy’s international youth sides, wants Mangia to take over.

“I’ve read the reports and I’ve heard the stories, but I don’t know anything about it,” the tactician told TMW.

“It’s nice to hear that Sacchi likes me because he is a well respected person. But I’m not aware of any of this, so I would prefer to not comment on the situation right now.”

Mangia started the last campaign as the youth team boss at Palermo following his summer switch from Varese.

However, he was promoted to the Rosanero first team following the August 31 dismissal of Stefano Pioli. Mangia was axed himself in December.

He was interviewed by Siena recently, but the Tuscan club opted to sign Serse Cosmi instead.
