Roberto Mancini is “disappointed, but his conscience is clear” after Manchester City sacked him, revealed his former assistant manager.

Fernando Orsi worked with Mancini at Lazio and Inter, so spoke to TMW about the surprise dismissal last night.

“I really didn’t expect it,” said Orsi. “Usually clubs base their decisions on results, but this time they let themselves get caught up in the wave of emotion that followed their FA Cup defeat to Wigan.

“I think it’s clear for all to see what Mancini achieved with City. He brought them back to an incredible level. It’s true he had a strong squad, but you can’t always win and create a winning mentality straight away.

“I did speak to him and he is fairly relaxed. His conscience is clear, as he knows that he worked well. He is certainly disappointed, but is also aware he took City back to the top level.”

It has now been confirmed that David Platt also left Manchester City after their decision to sack Mancio.

Mancini’s dismissal means he is back on the market and could fill one of several Serie A benches.

“I don’t know whether he’s thinking about getting back to work or taking a year out. He is a winner and wants to prove himself. He also has an important contract and is looking for clubs who want to win at the top level.

“Inter? It seems difficult, as returns don’t always go the way you want them to.”
