Mancini is considered the favourite to take Italy’s reins after Carlo Ancelotti reportedly rejected the job, and the Zenit St Petersburg Coach issued a come-and-get-me plea to the Azzurri’s powerbrokers.

“Am I in pole position to become CT? It’s hard to be in the loop with everything from St Petersburg,” the former Inter and Manchester City boss, who played 36 times for his country, told Gr Parlamento.

“I’ve never been in touch with the Federation, but coaching the national team would be prestigious and a source of pride for me because Italy are one of the most important teams in the world.

“If one day I got the chance to sit in the national team’s dugout, it would be something beautiful, but until now there hasn’t been anything.”
