Atalanta defender Gianluca Mancini had some regrets with a wasted chance, but relished the “dream” of his senior Italy debut.

The centre-back was an unusual choice at right-back for tonight’s 6-0 Euro 2020 qualifier against Liechtenstein.

“It was quite similar to what I do for Atalanta, as I stayed further back and Spinazzola pushed up more on the left, so I was fairly comfortable,” the 22-year-old debutant told Rai Sport.

“I had the chance to score an easy goal, I really wanted to score, but I ended up thinking about it for the rest of the half. However, the most important thing for defenders is to stop the opposition getting a goal.

“I felt emotional and nervous before the game, but you transform that into positive energy. Plus we’re in a group that makes you feel comfortable and confident, from the Coach to the teammates.

“Playing football for your country is a dream for every kid and the most wonderful experience in the world.”
