Roberto Mancini concedes Inter “didn’t do enough to win” in their goalless draw with Empoli.

Although it ended 0-0 at the Stadio Castellani, the hosts had considerably more possession and scoring opportunities.

“We didn’t create much, sat too deep and were too frightened at the start. We didn’t play from the back and that’s why we were under pressure, as we didn’t keep the ball,” Mancio told Sky Sport Italia.

It was a big step backwards from their performance in last week’s 3-1 victory over Genoa.

“I think a team needs time to grow. It’s not as if one win changes everything. The victory was important and it would’ve been good to get three points here for the climb towards third, but we knew it would be tough as Empoli play great football. We didn’t do enough to win.

“Everyone needs to do something more. It’s not one or two players, but starting from the back, having courage to take risks and play the ball, because we are Inter. Struggling under pressure from opponents is not our style.

“At times we just hold the ball without going anywhere and that’s useless. The strikers need to move around more and create openings.

“Empoli have always run hard as well as played good football. Not all of our players are in the best shape, so we still struggle in terms of intensity.”

Inter have now completed the first half of their season with 26 points thanks to six wins, eight draws and five defeats.

“The important thing is to notch up a series of positive results. There are regrets, but the truth is we didn’t do enough to win this game.”
