Roberto Mancini warns Italy fans not to expect a radical generational shift when Italy face Argentina in June. ‘It’ll be those who won the Euros, therefore also Lorenzo Insigne and Ciro Immobile.’

It has been an eventful year for the Azzurri, who went from lifting the EURO 2020 trophy at Wembley in June 2021 to missing out on the 2022 World Cup by losing the play-offs to North Macedonia.

Mancini will be back at Wembley Stadium on June 1 for the first edition of the Finalissima – a showcase between the winners of the European Championship and the Copa America.

While many are calling for a generational shift after the World Cup flop, Mancini warns not to expect radical changes.

“There aren’t that many choices to pick from,” the CT told RAI Sport.

“As we did against Turkey, a few young players will get a chance, but if everyone is available, then it’ll be those who won the Euros against Argentina. That’s because this was a match they earned by winning the European Championship.”

Insigne and Immobile said they haven’t yet made a decision on whether to continue their international careers following the bitter criticism received over the World Cup elimination.

“They will be there, especially for the first game against Argentina,” assured Mancini. “We’ll see what happens after that, but this is the plan.

“A month has passed since the World Cup play-off, the disappointment remains, but unfortunately there are moments when it doesn’t go your way and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

  1. Spot on Mancio. Now let’s get Pirlo, Totti and Toni on the team for this match. They earned it by bringing Italy the 4th WC. They are undroppable, retired or not.

Put them together with Immobile and Insigne and we will be unstoppable.

After all, there isn’t much to choose from.

    Bravo.

  2. LOL this guy cant let go of his pets. Immobile, Insigne, Berardi, Florenzi and Jorginho should never see the Nazionale again. Mancini, you’re out to lunch dude. Pack it in. smh

Nothing to choose from!? This should be the new national team when everyone is healthy.

    GK: Donnarumma, Consigli, Montipo
DEF: Calabria, Lazzari, Bonucci, Mancini, Bastoni, Dimarco/Biraghi, Spinazzola
MID: Veratti, Sensi, Barella, Zaniolo, Castrovilli, Pellegrini, Frattesi
ATT: Scamacca, Politano, Zaccagni, Balotelli, Raspadori, Chiesa.

Starting XI: Donnarumma; Lazzari, Bonucci, Bastoni, Spinazzola; Chiesa, Frattesi, Veratti, Zaccagni; Zaniolo, Scamacca/Balotelli

This is the squad and line up that Mancini should be moving forward with. We have some of the most talented midfielders in the world and knowing Mancini he’ll bring guys like Jorginho, Pessina, Cristante and Locatelli.

    Smarten up Mancini!

  3. I was advocating for Mancini to keep going now I’m beginning to wonder if he is trying to get fired on purpose. Insigne no longer cares about the NT or winning after the Euros, just that fat paycheck waiting for him in Canada. Immobile by now has no self confidence whatsoever which is needed in abundance as a striker. These guys are done idiot! move on already!

  4. mancini is on crack!
    he must not coach italy!
    he is afraid of change!
he does not have the guts to experiment new lineup.
he must be witnessing severe brain damage!!!

  5. Absolutely incredulous that Mancini’s doubling down on stupid! Devoted Italy fan since both maternal and paternal grandparents immigrated from there but this is ludicrous and borders on some sort form of cognitive dissonance or self-destructive behavior.

First time posting and may incur the wrath of the multitudes of other fans who supported retaining Mancini but he didn’t deliver and is not the great tactician that everyone thinks he is and was incapable of adjusting to the the opposing teams strategies in the final 3 matches of the EC going to PKs which is analogous to a throw of the dice and has nothing to do with dominating a match with a clear and decisive winner.

I will always remember what my brother-in-law said which is simplistic but profound “other teams play to win but Italy plays not to lose” in approaching a game.

In the past if coaches of the Italian National Team didn’t deliver like Mancini they had the decency and respect to resign and that’s what he should have done after the fiasco of not qualifying for the WC and for all those who blindly continue to support him then you probably still believe in fairy tales and that Immobile will score a hat-trick against Argentina!!!

  6. 2018 was a wonderful stressless World Cup. No Italy and watched as a casual fam. Cheering Canada all the way🇨🇦🇨🇦

  7. GK: Donnarumma MONTIPO SILVESTRI

DEF: LAZZARI CALABRIA MANCINI Bastoni Bonucci ROMAGNOLI LUIZ FELIPE Spinazzola BIRAGHI

MID: Barella Veratti TONALI FRATESSI POBEGA PELLEGRINI SENSI

FW: ORSOLINI Berardi SCAMACCA ZANIOLO PINAMONTI Chiesa Raspadori

Yes, Mancio is correct, there are no alternatives to select. We must stick to Immobile and Insigne.

With the team above, he can also run a 5-3-2 to keep the opponents guessing.

But Immobile and Insigne won the Euros. They deserve to continually be picked.

  8. Not immobile and insigne?! Please not them. I mean they are good players but still. Raspadori shot two goals. He is amazing. But then again he just started because immobile and insigne weren’t available

  9. Living in a past, will not benefit him in the future, ask Lippi how loyalty worked out for him.

Without the World Cup, Italy had to start now, and turn a negative into a head start on everyone else for the next Euro and World Cup 26, starting with Argentina then the nations league – competitive games to try your hand with something new, considering previous form, ages and who’s likely to have to miss out, with the next tournament over 3 years away. Factors you cannot ignore post a qualification disaster, which despite all the reasoning, had a lot to do with certain players failing, Mancini as manager had the opportunity to change that, accept responsibility for his faults, and come back stronger – rather than living in denial and taking a defiant and defensive stance to all the shortfalls.

As long as Insigne (who cares more about money than Legacy) and Immobile (who’s up there with the worst forwards Italy has had in history), I won’t be tuning into watch my beloved. I’ve never said that in my entire life. But it’s the right call, wasting my life investing in a team, that based on what Mancini has just said could fail to reach another major tournament again or at least get humiliated at one of the next two tournaments, and why? Because he is proving to be too stubborn. And that’s a team that with more dynamism and more ruthlessness, was / is capable of winning again. Was and is depends on Mancini. As it stands it doesn’t look good.

We should have been talking about Udogie and Zanoli creeping into a World Cup squad right now, and debating whether Pellegri can stay fit, keep scoring and be our number 9, and whether wild cars like Esposito can get a position in the squad, and can Zaniolo light up the tournament with devastating effect like Chiesa, and how incredible that duo could be in Qatar in a front line.

Yet we are talking about Immobile and Insigne who were both huge failures in the recent qualification journey. There has never been an easier moment to ditch both.
They’ve never been good enough, Insigne has been too inconsistent throughout his career, despite moments, and now he’s past his best. Immobile might be the worst best scorer in history, never in big games, never in big moments, he always gets found out.

Nevertheless, Mancini is treating them like they are Baggio and Vieri. With international football you only earn anything based on your most recent performances and results – based on that they’ve earned nothing – too much negative events have happened in between and even during the euros this duo were becoming suspect, hence the goals dried up, without Spinazzola and Chiesa in the team.

We have an abundance of talent in all positions, new crop of defenders coming through starting in serie a, a midfield that speaks for itself, again with fresh talent coming through, Chiesa / Zaniolo potential Ballon D’or candidates if both can stay fit like Ronaldo their entire careers, then some bright forwards, Scamacca, Pellegri, Esposito.

Euro team won but every team needs tweaks to continue to win.

We all had doubts about Insigne and Immobile but they got picked, those doubts can’t be proved on the pitch and still get ignored. It’s insanity, even if they were scoring 3 between them a game, we’d still know deep down these two can fail at any moment, yet neither scored or created anything in several matches, yet they are guarantees.

Mancini is beginning to show cracks.

  10. Doesn’t Mancini know that the National Team doesn’t belong to him, nor the players who happened to win a tournament? Since when is it correct to award players a place in the NT when those same players couldn’t even manage to secure a WC qualification? He says there’s not much to choose from, but i would prefer to see a fresh, young Italian team failing, rather than one where all the hope and expectation just made the failure all the more painful.
Somebody has to change his mind-set. The game against Argentina would be an ideal ‘fresh start’ for the NT. Sure, wheel on those Euro players for a few minutes towards the end of the game, but don’t start the game with the same mentality that has brought us to another WC with no Italy

  11. Mancini is a fool and living in the past. Argentina will best Italy if certain players are not removed or changed on the Italian team.

  12. Hey Mancini can you see any polyps up there ???? You need to pull your head out before it’s too late are you going to end up the way Of Mussolini . Take a look at Carlettos team in the previous comments , he Makes much more sense than you do !!! I was your biggest fan Mancio but you’ve been slowly deteriorating mentally Since the euros !!!! If you don’t make change now you’re gonna lose the Fanbase you gained … Mamma mia che se PATSO !!! ???

  13. Mancini is everything you don’t want in a coach:

He’s a coward who is scared to change anything, from tactics and strategy to players and formations.
He has no imagination, no vision, no guts. Despite failure after failure, he has pigheadedly continued down that same path of failure. Because it’s the easy path, the only one he knows, and the one he has chosen, so of course it’s the best and only path.

He makes phoney excuses rather than taking responsibility; that he stays with the same players because they have earned loytalty, rather than playing the players in the best form; that he has no other options, when there are many talented, quality players dieing to be called up; et.c, etc. And despite the crushing blow to the National Team and the fanatical fans of the Azzurri of missing out on a second World Cup in a row, due to his incompetence and arrogance, he refuses to resign – probably never even contemplated it because he won’t accept that it’s his fault and instead brushes it off with the infuriating, dismissive statement “there are moments when it doesn’t go your way and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Sadly, Mancini will remain in charge because Italy is so completely focused on club teams (is Italy still living in a time of City States?) that the national Team is often given second shrift and overlooked. The future of the Azzurri is looking dim.

  14. Carnesecchi, Cragno, Donnarumma

    Bastoni, Bellanova, Bonucci, Calabria,Cambiaso, Di Lorenzo,Gatti, Lovato, Mancini,Okoli, Parisi,Luca Pellegrini,Scalvini,Spinazzola,Udogie, Viti,

    Barella,Fagioli,Frattesi,Locatelli,LorenzoPellegrini,Pobega,Ricci,Rovella,Tonali,Verratti

    Berardi,Chiesa,Gaetano,Pinamonti,Raspadori,Scamacca,Zaccagni,Zaniolo Zerbin,

we do have players for the future, the men in charge of italian football need to grow a pair asap

  15. If Mancini plays Immobile against Argentina then he should be fired. We cannot allow his continued bizarre behavior to continue and harm the national team any further.
