The former Galatasaray boss emerged as one of the candidates to take over from Cesare Prandelli almost immediately after the World Cup.

Prandelli was swift in handing in his resignation following the Azzurri’s group stage exit from the tournament in Brazil.

Mancini, Luciano Spalletti and Massimiliano Allegri were seen as the front-runners, but according to Sport Mediaset, the ex-Manchester City Coach is now the FIGC’s number one target.

The Federation first have to appoint a new President after Giancarlo Abete resigned post-World Cup.

But once they do, Mancini is thought to be virtually assured the chance to lead his country to Euro 2016.
