Prandelli was swift in handing in his resignation following the Azzurri’s group stage exit from the tournament in Brazil.
Mancini, Luciano Spalletti and Massimiliano Allegri were seen as the front-runners, but according to Sport Mediaset, the ex-Manchester City Coach is now the FIGC’s number one target.
The Federation first have to appoint a new President after Giancarlo Abete resigned post-World Cup.
But once they do, Mancini is thought to be virtually assured the chance to lead his country to Euro 2016.
