Handanovic, responsible in the first half in particular for keeping the score down, believed it was a game of two halves.

“In the first half we did poorly, we had a bad approach,” said the Slovenian in the mixed zone post-match. “But in the second half we upped our play and we could have won the match.

“We're improving and we train with a view to make 2015 a better year.

“Games change, if we'd gone down 2-0 in the first half it would have been difficult to come back, but we believed in it.

“The Coach told us what was wrong and fixed the team, and it showed.

“The save on [Paul] Pogba was as difficult as any other.

“With [Coach Roberto] Mancini we changed our philosophy, things are different. I think it was a good point in the end.”

Handanovic was asked for his view on the on-pitch exchange between Icardi and Osvaldo towards the end of the game.

“I read the display of nerves between Icardi and Osvaldo in a positive light, it means we all want to win.”
