Italy CT Roberto Mancini has claimed the lack of “resources” holds Serie A down and hopes to see big investors come to raise the level.

The Azzurri are preparing for Euro 2020 after a perfect 10 in the qualifiers and Mancini has brought the enthusiasm and joy back to the nation after a few rough years at the international stage.

But he points to Serie A, where most of his players ply their trade, and said the League must reach the heights from 40 years ago.

“Serie A must return to the levels of the ‘80s and ‘90s, when it represented the best football in the world,” Mancini told Esquire. “Today, the difference between Italy and foreign football lies in the resources available to the clubs.

The former Manchester City coach knows what it takes to become a contender in modern football, after helping the Citizens establish themselves among the elite of English and European football.

The current Azzurri coach brought Champions League to the Etihad Stadium for the first time in history and secured the Premier League title in 2011-23, ending 44-year-long wait.

He is not sure if it could happen over night in Italy, despite proposing a change also in Serie A.

“At the moment I find it to be quite difficult, but we hope it can be in the future,” he said. “I’m sure that important owners could invest in Italian football and acquire clubs that express a higher level of football.”
