Manchester United are ready to make a €40m bid for Palermo starlet Javier Pastore this summer, according to Il Corriere dello Sport.

Sir Alex Ferguson is said to feel that his side need a central playmaker to take the creative burden off the aging Paul Scholes.

Manchester City have previously made inquiries about the Argentina international, the most recent coming at the end of the January transfer window.

Pastore has spoken of his desire to stay at Palermo next season even amid reported interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The 21-year-old's plan to play regularly in Sicily rather than sit on the bench at one of Europe's biggest clubs is a measure of his maturity.

However, Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini might be prepared to cash in on El Flaco if the offer is commensurate with his valuation.

Zamparini has repeatedly said that he considers Pastore to be worth as much as €70m, which, if true, means Manchester United will have to up their prospective offer.
