“[President Urbano] Cairo did so many interviews saying he wanted to keep me in Turin,” Maksimovic told Blic in his homeland.

“But I had already agreed to leave. I could have gone to Napoli the year before, but they wouldn’t let me go. I had decided to leave Torino regardless of the Coach.

“I chose a club with big ambitions, it’s an important step in my professional career. I said these things to Mihajlovic too, there was never a discussion with him.

“Before my exclusion for the Coppa Italia game [against Pro Vercelli] I was waiting for a phone call from Cairo to let me know what he had decided about the offers which had come in for me.

“I tried to call him, but he didn’t answer all day. So I decided to leave.

“Mihajlovic’s comments? They’re his problem, I hold my head high.”
