Makkelie is a 35-year-old referee who most recently officiated Spain’s 2-1 Nations League win in England in September.

His record with Italian teams is of two wins, a draw and a defeat.

He already took charge of Italy’s 3-2 World Cup qualifier in Montenegro, resulting in a 3-2 victory in October 2016.

Makkelie’s record with Portuguese sides is three victories, a draw and two losses.

His previous games with the senior Portugal squad were competitive wins away to Northern Ireland in September 2013 and Hungary in September 2017.

There was also a 1-0 home friendly defeat to France in 2015.

The Northern Ireland match was extremely ill-tempered, as Helder Postiga and Kyle Lafferty received straight red cards, while Chris Brunt was sent off for two bookable offences, leaving the Irish down to nine men.
