Napoli defender Christian Maggio hopes former side Vicenza can return soon – “the city, the fans and the team deserve the best”.
The 35-year-old began his career with the Lanerossi, who were declared bankrupt yesterday and will have to begin again from Serie D, if new owners can be found to form a phoenix club.
“This is me 17 years ago!” Maggio posted on Instagram, below a picture of him playing for Vicenza.

“Today I’m sad because Vicenza Calcio, the team of my city, the team where I grew up and which gave me the chance to become a player, has gone bankrupt.
“I hope that this club can get back to where it counts as soon as possible, because the city, the fans and the team deserve the best.
