Napoli wing-back and Italian international Christian Maggio has spoken about his hopes for 2012.

“Let’s hope that Napoli can continue to surprise next year,” the former Sampdoria player told Radio Marte on Wednesday.

“We’ve had a positive season so far and we want that to carry on.”

Napoli, after finishing third last season, will play Chelsea in the last 16 of the Champions League in February.

“We’ll do all that we can to get through,” added the right-back. “Chelsea are certainly a strong side, but we are not scared.

“We are ready to take on any opponent.”

Maggio is a key man for the Azzurri and is expected to soon extend his contract, which expires in 2013, until 2016.

“I hope to stay here for as long as possible,” he added. “I initially struggled to adapt, but this is my home now after four years of being here.”

As well as targeting glory with Napoli, the former Sampdoria man is also hoping to make Euro 2012 with his country.

“I want to deserve my place in the squad,” he added. “We could do great things and I’m satisfied with what we have achieved so far, but we’ll have to see what happens.”
