The Spanish club have been heavily linked with the striker in recent days, with L’Équipe reporting yesterday that a potential move had been discussed by the club and Coach Zinedine Zidane.

Today’s Gazzetta dello Sport points out that Icardi’s €110m release clause isn’t valid in January, so he’d cost even more than that if Los Merengues wanted to make a move this month.

The Nerazzurri captain isn’t cup-tied in the Champions League, so he could play for Madrid in that competition if he moved to the Bernabeu.

The newspaper speculates that the Spanish champions could even offer Benzema in exchange, handing the Beneamata a replacement straight away.

Despite that, Gazzetta also points out that Inter’s Financial Fair Play situation does not mean they have to sell their star man.

In addition, Icardi has always maintained that he wants to stay with the club, so a January move looks almost impossible.

Indeed, a meeting is scheduled between his wife and agent, Wanda, and the club’s lawyers for February to renew the Argentinian’s contract.

Icardi would be given a wage rise, while the club would also raise his release clause higher than the current €110m.
