Former Fiorentina player Arturo Lupoli believes it was a mistake to sign for the Viola from Arsenal back in 2007.

Rather than opt to renew his contract with the Gunners, the 30-year-old instead opted to move to Florence.

A disappointing two-year spell at the Artemio Franchi followed, with Lupoli plying his trade in Italy’s second and third tiers ever since.

“It wasn’t the best decision to sign for the Viola,” the forward admitted during an interview with TMW.

“It wasn’t the best decision to sign for the Viola,” the forward admitted during an interview with TMW.

“I had just been promoted from the Championship with Derby County and there was the opportunity to renew my contract at Arsenal and go back to Derby on loan.

“I chose Fiorentina and, considering how things went, it’s obvious it would have been better to continue my adventure in the Premier League.”

Lupoli was asked whether he had aimed too high, too soon by signing for a club of Fiorentina’s stature.

“Exactly. I needed to have another experience with a mid-table team, either in the Premier League or Serie A.

“But instead I arrived at a Fiorentina who were strongly aiming to get back in the Champions League.”
