The Biancocelesti faithful have deserted the Curva Nord section for much of this season in protest against new security measures that involved the insertion of a barrier in the section.
Before last night, the capital club were without a league win since October and the shock at San Siro will ease the pressure on under-fire Coach Stefano Pioli.
"Tonight was a great test of character, my warmest congratulations to the guys and the technical staff for a very high-level performance," Lotito said to ANSA after the match.
"Today we finally showed our real value, winning a difficult match. We are still in the running and the season is long.
"I strongly believe in this team, I hope our fans also come back to support them with enthusiasm."
